The lime works at Charlestown was established by the fifth Earl of Elgin to supply lime by sea to markets all over the east coast of Scotland. There were thick seams of limestone in the vicinity, and coal a short distance inland. The kilns were mostly comleted between 1761 and 1799 and operated until c1939, though the crushing of limestone continued into the 1950s. The crusher was sited where the openings can be seen in the upper part of the kiln block at the right end. The whole block of fourteen limekilns is scheduled as an ancient monument.
